Ayn Rand founded Objectivism. Her statement, as a Jew who has known both nazism and communism, is that altruism is a twisted "morality" making people conditioned slaves to a collective ideal. And that very collective ideal might lead people and governments to become totalitarians, fanatics.

Therefore Ayn Rand makes a point about dealing with one's own life first, even in an individualistic, egotic manner, in order to not get involved into collective ideals which are anyway KILLING individual enterprises, self-management. Ayn Rand wants to warn against all kind of totalitarianism, might it be left-winged or right-winged. She wants people to step back from blind collective engagement for or against political causes. Use your own judgement, keep a distance, as still an individual, free from any kind of emotional alliance to any political (religious, collective) party or cause.
